Attention is a central concept in cognitive psychology. In her research, Dr. Marlene Behrmann from Carnegie Mellon University addresses basic problems in attention and the role that attention plays in cognitive disorders such as hemispatial neglect. Neglect patients fail to process information presented to their neglected side even though their perceptual abilities are preserved. By carefully investigating the experiences and behaviors of her patients, Dr. Behrmann tries to shed light on some of the underlying attentional processes at work. In a second line of research, Dr. Behrmann is also interested in visual object perception, especially disorders of face perception (prosopagnosia = 'face blindness').
