Early left anterior negativity: ELAN

Early left anterior negativity: ELAN

About This Video

The early left anterior negativity is a polarization of the electrical field as measured on the scalp through EEG. It appears very early in processing of auditory stimuli (around 150 ms). It is related to the coarse processing of syntactic information – for example if a verb is placed in the position where a noun is expected. Early on, syntactic processing therefore seems to dominate language processing.
